We live in a world of comparisons. People are taking social media sabbaths just to clear their heads from all the never-ending news and content that they are consuming.

There is one more reason why people are quitting social media — they’re comparing their lives to the ‘near perfect’ lives of others. This, according to research, is causing depression and anxiety among people.

It’s tough to stop comparing ourselves with others. From a young age, we compare ourselves to our siblings, then our friends, then our colleagues at work, and it never really ends.

If comparison prods you to up your game and do better, it may be fine. If you get inspired by the class topper and emulate their study habits, you may just get closer to fulfilling your potential.

On the other hand, baseless comparison is pointless and sends us on a downward spiral.

Our lives and accomplishments are a sum total of our experiences and back stories. If someone younger than you has climbed up the ladder faster, it maybe because they had better guidance and opportunities than you.

Some people may know how to play the water-cooler conversation game way better than you, and you just cannot comprehend or bring yourself to play that game. Imagine the futility of comparing yourself to them. They are moving forward because they are playing a game you are absolutely miserable at.

Finding someone that matches your back story, your back ground, your experiences and your self-talk is like trying to find someone who matches your DNA profile — it’s near impossible. There maybe people with similar back grounds and upbringing but still, all of our stories and journeys are different.

Instead, it’s better to seek what you admire in people and model those attributes.

You can never be someone else as much as no one can be you.

The only thing you can do is be a better version of yourself.
