Today is Varsha Piruppu, the Tamil New Year.

Tomorrow is Vishu, the Malayalam New Year.

Last week, Kannadigas celebrated Ugadi, their New Year.

I love festivals and occasions because of their symbolism.

We are right now in April. Many of us would have begun the year with grandiose goals and dreams. Some of us are making progress, some of us have been side-tracked and have lost sight of what we set out to do. Inevitably, this leads to lot of disappointment and frustration and we throw in the towel.

But do you remember the zeal with which you began the New Year?

Our festivals are symbolic of new beginnings and fresh starts. And even if you don’t believe in the stories and myths behind them, you can still take out a larger meaning.

It can be a fresh start and a New Year, today, tomorrow and whichever day you choose.
