Diwali and fear of the light

Diwali celebrations have begun all over India.

From a young age, we have been taught about the significance of the festival — of how Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya after his 14 year old exile and was welcomed with the people of the town lighting diyas to celebrate his return. Largely, the festival is a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance.

All of us are constantly seeking ways to move from what we perceive as darkness towards the light.

From bad habits to good ones.

From an unsatisfying job to a job that makes a difference and brings out the best of our abilities.

From ennui to challenge and excitement.

From underappreciated to recognised.

From misunderstanding to acceptance.

Life is about constantly seeking methods to move towards the light.

At some point, I came to a stark realisation — many of us are running away from the light and seeking comfort in the darkness.

Darkness can be anything — fear, anger, ignorance, arrogance — all of which keep us from fulfilling our potential. The light, though positive, still means shedding old ways, thoughts habits and stories. And the thing is, we often know what we are hiding from. Until something forces us to face to face the light, we are content hiding from it. In other words, what we are running away from isn’t darkness, but the light.

Darkness and light are two sides of the same coin.

And to get to the light or experience more of it in our lives, we first have to stop fearing it.

Wishing you all a Happy and Prosperous Diwali in advance.
